The Quiet Cost of Drifting

July 28, 2026

Drift rarely announces itself. It arrives as a good enough year, repeated until it becomes a decade.

No man decides to drift. He simply postpones a decision often enough that the postponement becomes the decision. The mortgage gets paid, the emails get answered, the years get spent.

Drift is expensive because it is comfortable. There is no crisis to respond to, no obvious failure to correct — only a slow widening of the gap between the life you are living and the one you would choose on a clear morning.

The men I work with rarely arrive in crisis. They arrive competent, respected, and quietly furious that competence has not translated into direction. That fury is useful. It is the first honest signal in years.

The work is not motivational. We look at the ledger: where the hours actually go, what the money actually buys, which relationships you actually protect. Evidence ends the argument you have been having with yourself.

Then we subtract. Almost every man is carrying three commitments that cost him ten. Removing them is not self-improvement; it is basic accounting applied to a life.
